With her life up in the air, Jenna decides to take a road trip with her larger-than-life grandmother, Evelyn, to the seaside town where their family's history was shaped. Through the dual timelines of Evelyn's young adulthood and Jenna's present, the author tells a beautiful tale of love, loss, and second chances. 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘𝗗: - decent character development for Jenna - cute summer romance - profound theme of family secrets and second chances - Evelyn in the 1950s timeline was a force of nature and I enjoyed her half of the story more than Jenna's. 𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜 𝗗𝗜𝗗𝗡'𝗧 𝗟𝗜𝗞𝗘: - Evelyn in the present timeline is a manipulative person who intentionally hides details in an effort to remain mysterious. There was a lot of gaslighting, which didn't feel right for her relationship with her granddaughter. - overwhelming volume of side characters that made it hard to follow the story. Evelyn had so many siblings who had so many kids that it was hard to keep track of them all, even if most of them didn't play a significant role in the plot. - the family history wasn't revealed in chronological order. Evelyn told Jenna half-truths about her past, making it difficult to follow along with the story. 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗖𝗟𝗨𝗦𝗜𝗢𝗡: A heartwarming read about family bonds and second chances. If you love sassy grandmas and summer romances then definitely give this one a read. 𝗤𝗢𝗧𝗗: I've been looking to read more books with wise and sassy grandmothers/grandfathers. I was not the biggest fan of reading in high school. English literature class was an absolute bore and if a book had a film adaptation, you could be sure that I was gonna watch the movie instead (even if the book was better lol). So I got no clue where this obsession for reading came from. Maybe it's old age or maybe it started from sheer boredom.
